Case study Auchan Hypermarket

BackgroundAuchan, one of the pioneers in the hypermarkets landscape in France and throughout the world, has always shown a great deal of innovation in designing these retail areas. And in these times, where sustainability is always one of the central talking-points, it has become one of the priorities for Auchan to install a new generation of stores that respect the environment. The challengeThe challenge underlying this new store is to reduce to a minimum the energy consumption of the building without diminishing the attractiveness and comfort of the retail area. In terms of lighting this is translated into a reduction in electrical consumption while maintaining the same level of rendering. By combining a solution that meets this challenge with other measures such as recovering rainwater harvesting, solar energy or improved insulation, the idea is to get a building with minimised running costs and environmental impact. The solution160 recessed LED FORCE ONE 4000 luminaires were installed in the cornices of the main hall in the Auchan commercial centre. Each of these luminaires contains a Fortimo LED DLM 840 2000 lm. The reflector used for this project provides ambient lighting along the walls of the commercial centre and this light combines perfectly with the other light sources in the mall. BenefitsThe height of the cornices, 4,5 metres, makes maintenance difficult and expensive in this hypermarket. So the Fortimos’ life of 50,000 hours minimises the need for maintenance operations over time and the associated costs. This longevityof the product is reinforced by the luminaire’s 5-year warranty for the Fortimo system. The energy savings achieved per luminaire compared with a conventional compact fluorescent source contributes to the store’s record overall energy savings. The lighting flexibility of these LED luminaires makes optimised lighting management possible and allows lights to be switched on and off in the course of the day if the exterior light entering buildings is sufficient. With this Fortimo solution this is a successful bet for this Auchan store, which in combination with the other procedures put in place will see its overall energy consumption fall by 50% compared with a conventional store concept: and most of this consumption will be provided by the energy produced on site.
