The Future is Here – And I’m Excited!

September, 2016

As a child growing up in the 70s I was introduced to the world of robots. From Star Wars to the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – the future looked exciting and was driven by technology.

Having worked in the technology sector all my career I have followed the impact that digital disruption has had on business and the pace at which we can reinvent the world in which we live.

At Philips Lighting I have the opportunity to be part of technology innovation that has a huge benefit on our lives, as well as to businesses. We have lighting systems that complement human biology - did you know that cool blue light is the best way to wake the body up in the morning? And for those days in the office when it’s dark and raining outside, just 30 minutes of the right type of office light can increase energy levels.

So what’s next? For me it’s all about artificial intelligence.
And the concept of self-healing cities has really captured my imagination. Let’s take street lighting as an example. Street lighting is one of the most essential services provided by local authorities. Street lighting plays a unique role, because it transforms the visual appearance of places and can make urban areas accessible, usable, and safe at night.

Already with Philips CityTouch we can remotely control lighting levels, monitor the energy being used and detect which lights need repairing.
But imagine if, as part of a self-healing city, street lights could fix themselves. Through artificial intelligence and the use of robotics, problems are fixed before they appear. No downtime. No people resource challenges.

Artificial intelligence is being touted as the ‘fourth industrial revolution.’
Klaus Schwab, executive chairman of the WEF says: “We stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work and relate to one another.  In its scale, scope, and complexity, the transformation will be unlike anything humankind has experienced before.”

I’m excited, are you?
